only if his wallet is big enough...thing sells at a price just below a 500mm, way above the 200-400. New quality of that 2xTC sounds nice.

What is a better bokeh machine?

200 f/2
or
300 f/2.8 (either version)

but god damn, Nikon knows how to make some sexy looking lenses

In fact I do wonder how much better it could possible be? The lens hood which needed to be longer is still exactly the same, the case that comes with it still only has 1 strap (useless) not 2, and it's 30g heavier than the original 300 2.8 VR !

i agree, how much better can the new 300mm be over the original 300 VR which is very highly regarded, also in terms of updating for a "super" tele it is still quite young.

I agree with the sexy look- and I am thoroughly conditioned to react (read: drool) to white!

On the bokeh, looking at the specs the 300 f2.8 should have better DOF capabilities (meaning, smaller DoF at F300mm 2.8 than 200mm F2 due to the larger physical aperture of the 300mm).

Thats as much as we can derive from the specs... the rest will be require looking at the dreaded MTF charts or just getting a sample pic :)

The 200mm f/2 definately produces the better bokeh.

Nice work from Nikon, BUT this one is to big for my wallet and my back when travelling !

As quite a few other fellows in the Nikon community (I'm not converted to the brand, sometimes I really consider changing to the canonians group - but my wallet .... throwing everything overboard), I'm rather disappointed that the much praised and excellent 300mm f4 - much more compact and lighter for travellers - is not yet available in a VR version.

They make a 85mm DX macro lens - no one is waiting for that one !!!! just 100 euro cheaper than the praised 105mm VR.

I'm still very happy with my D300, but woul like the brand serving it's faithfull customers in good manner.

I wouldn't take it as a personal thing! Nikon still make a great many simply amazing lenses - 300mm f/2.8 VR, 400mm f/2.8 VR, 500/600mm f/4 VR, 200-400 f/4 VR etc etc. It's worth staying nikon for the 200-400 f/4 VR !!

Dear Juza,

I would love to see/read a review of the EOS 1D IV.

In how far have you already thought of that?
Merry Christmas and Greetings!

I think marctally means that the C brand has a whole line for the ethousiast budget, which Nikon misses. You either have a 80-400 which has slow AF or the 300 f/4 which misses VR. Next step is 300 2.8 or a 200-400 f/4 either of which will cost you 4500-5500 E. I love Nikon, no doubt about it, but I have also had my doubts about switching just for budget's sake.
This new 300 is rated about 500 E below the 500mm. Let says it drops a bit, but not a whole 1500E orso back at the level of the current 300 2.8.
