Shooting data: Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM, 1/1000 f/5, iso 400, handheld. Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina.

In my latest trip to Patagonia I have had the opportunity to use extensively the 7D in the field, for wildlife photography. I bought the 7D in late November and I immediately liked it...now I like it even more! This photo has been taken in Tierra Del Fuego, near Ushuaia. Like all wildlife photos of this trip, it is taken handheld: using a stabilized lens, plus relatively high ISO, it is possible to get tack sharp photos! The image quality of the 7D is a good improvement in comparison with the previous semi-pro APS-C cameras, like the 20D, 40D, 50D. The 20D has good image quality up to ISO 1600, but the 40D made a little step back in terms of ISO capabilities - it had more resolution, but from my tests it was about 0.5 stops noisier. The trend continued with the 50D: even higher resolution, but a bit more noise than 40D and 20D...with the 7D, instead, things have changed: while resolution keep growing, this time the noise has been lowered in comparison with the 50D. The 7D is fully usable up to ISO 1600, and even 3200 can be used if you don't mind some noise.

What about sharpness and resolution? In studio, with the 7D you can get a detail that is very close to the detail of 1DsIII...in other words, fantastic! In the field, it is a little more difficult to get the best from the 18 megapixels APS-C sensor: if you use cheap lenses or so-so techniques, you won't see much advantage in comparison to the 10 megapixels of the 40D. Of course resolution will never be worse - in the worst case it will be on par. It is a common misconception to think that a photo is "sharper" when taken with a low pixel count camera: if you have first rate lenses and great techniques, a camera with more megapixel will give the same sharpness and more resolution (more detail). In the worst case, the camera with more megapixel will look softer at 100% (because the image is more magnified), but when comparing photos resized at the same resolution, for example at 10 megapixels, the detail will be the same.

100% crop (post processed with noise reduction and sharpening) from the previous photo.

The 300 f/2.8 L IS is one of my favorite lenses, and it makes a great combo with the 7D: you get a 480mm f/2.8 equivalent, razor sharp even wide open. The large aperture allows to get fast shutter speed, and the APS-C sensor gives 1 stop advantage in terms of depth of field, in comparison with fullframe. You can even use it with the 2x teleconverter, with surprisingly good results, if you stop down a little...I have been amazed by the image quality of 7D + 300 2.8 IS + 2x! And with this combo you have a 600mm f/5.6 (960mm equivalent), a killer lens for wildlife, easily handholdable and easy to carry around, unlike the bigger superteles.
Of course, other than a good lens you need fast shutter speed, to avoid motion blur, and good AF. If you are not satisfied by the sharpness of your photos, be sure to check the AF calibration: for example, my Canon 300 2.8 required a -15 correction, otherwise all photos were slightly out of focus.

Overall, I have appreciated nearly everything about the 7D - there are only two things I'd have like to see improved: even lower noise (the 7D is already good, but 1 or 2 stops of improvement are always welcome!) and two APS-C wide-angles to replace my fullframe Sigma 12-24 and Sigma 20 1.8. We will have to wait a year or two to get lower noise in the next 7D, while for the wide-angles I had a nice surprise when I came back from the trip: Sigma has announced a 8-16mm for APS-C, equivalent to 12-24mm on fullframe! This is one of the lenses I was waiting for, and if image quality will be good, it will become my wide angle on the 7D...and in my next trip I may even leave at home the 1DsIII!

Some more 100% crops from other photos:

Image

Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM, 1/2500 f/2.8, iso 400, handheld. 100% crop (post processed with noise reduction and sharpening).

Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM, 1/320 f/3.2, iso 800, handheld. 100% crop (post processed with noise reduction and sharpening).

Last, a pretty impressive 100% crop from the 300 2.8 + 2x, stopped down by just 0.3 stop!

Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM, Canon 2.0x TC, 1/1250 f/6.3, iso 400, handheld. 100% crop (post processed with noise reduction and sharpening)

Thank you Juza for this great report

Question : do you think that the 5D MK2 photo is sharper than 7D ?

Thanks

Thanks Juza for your interesting report. Silvia is using the 7d right now and we notice the files are not that 'clean' in lightroom as the files of the 5dmkII. In fact we find it bit annoying and even bit dissapoiting. By default there always seems some noise in the sky, even with relative low iso settings. So what do you use for noise reduction techniques in the postprocessing?

Also interesting what you say about the Af, I will check Silvia's 7d here with that too, in spite of the fact our lenses seem to do well in sharpness with the 5dmkII. What technique do you use to correct the sharpness?

cheers and hope to see more! My head is still full of northwest argentine, but later I will post more of Patagonia too at the forum

Hans you are not the only one facing these issues. The internet is full of them... But I am going to Namibia soon and taking 5d2 and 7d... Will try and shoot mostly with 5d2 but 7d will be on my lap waiting for fast action shots and quick magnification changes. I do not know how far the animals will be but intend to put my 300 2.8 on 5d2 and 600 on 7d...
Thanks Juza for giving me the confidence to shoot on 7D.

Hi Juza!

Thank you very much for your excellent 7D field report.
Did you use your 7D as a video camera? How do you compare it with your HF10?

7D video report will be very good for us.

Hi Hanskoot

I haven't noticed the same sky/noise issue with the 7D (NR low) myself, but I have found the files are just very slightly soft and require more sharpening in DPP than I did when I had my 50D. After about 2 hours of testing with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS mounted, I have concluded that + 7 micro adjustment gives the best results with my 7D. Overall I extremely pleased with the image quality and noise control from 7D. Money well spent!

Cheers

it probably indicates its better to use dpp for developing, we will give that a try here!

Here a not scientific comparison between dpp and lightroom at near default settings. I added slight brightness to lightroom to match up more with dpp, and choose camera default settings instead of adobe default.
Shot is from the apartment we were some weeks ago. Camera 7d, Lens is the canon 2.8 macro at f5.6 iso 100 magnification is 200% !! First conclusion.. lightroom resolves more detail and noise. Second conclusion, the 7d can resolve a lot of detail indeed... Hope i can add the image, its tad larger  (added) I changed it for smaller
Image

ahhh and notice the black dot in the sky, not appearing at lightroom.... I have no explanation for that, you?

Thanks for the report. I agree with your conclusions. The 7D is awesome. I really like mine. A HUGE step from the 40D.
The new AF of the 7D is wonderful. I get a lot more keepers with birds in flight with the 7D.

Question : do you think that the 5D MK2 photo is sharper than 7D ?

If you use first quality lenses, the sharpness is the same; if you use average lenses, the 5D2 photos will be sharper, because it has larger photosites AND larger sensor (if sensor size was the same, there won't be difference once the images are resized to the same resolution).

So what do you use for noise reduction techniques in the postprocessing?

I use my usual PS technique: http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/articles/n ... uction.htm

Did you use your 7D as a video camera? How do you compare it with your HF10?

I have not used a lot the video, but the first impression is very positive, miles above the HF10 :)

Nice non scientific test Hans! I think I will live in ignorant bliss and stick with DPP :) Lightroom definitely gets more detail out of the shot. have you found the reason for the black dot yet? seems very strange....

I dont think so that the 7D is the same sharpness as 5D mark2 !!! ...5dmark2 is perfect camera with FF senzor and perfect picture quality..even the 5D mark1 but I found a 7d a bit soft even with 300mm f2,8 L IS and 400mm f2,8 L IS ..I found more details in 40D photo than in 7D photo and I found a 40D a bit sharper..for me the 7D is dissapointing and it is just about marketing...Lot of megapixels on crop senzor and quality is poor for the price of camera (7D) sorry for english

You just can`t compare 7D with 5D mkII. IQ, sharpness, bokeh... is much much better from 5D mkII than from 7D. I`ve expected more from 7D, I`m very dissapointed! That`s why I sold it... and I`m getting 5D mkI... which I think is still great camera and about 1/2 cheaper than 5D mkII. Btw... regarding images from 7D... If I want to show image quality from DSLR I wouldn`t use any noise reduction or sharpening tools... ;)

Hi Tomatito,

Could you back up your statement with some examples? When I look at the first picture and it's 100% crop, I don't think the 7D makes soft pictures or at least you can make the pictures look sharp (great CD by Joe Jackson by the way :)).

Peerke, I`ve uploaded for you original photo taken with 5D mkII and 300mm 2.8 L IS lens.
Exif: f2.8, ISO 200, shutter speed 1/800
I DIDN`T APPLY ANY SHARPENING OR NOISE REDUCTION!!! Photo was converted from RAW to JPEG. Than at IRFANVIEW saved on quality 90, just to reduce file size.
