Shooting data: Nikon D3, Nikon 200-400 iso 200 1/60 sec. f/5.6

The great northern diver is a very rare bird in Holland. I think this is a juvenile. Wonderful bird and bigger then I thought it would be.
Taken from a floating hide. Weather is crap. Very windy and wet but I think it was worth the effort.

A beautiful capture, a really lovely shot!
I saw quite a number of these birds from the cottage we were staying in while we were on the Isle of Skye, Scotland at the end of October, but didn't manage to get close enough for any good shots. It may not necessarily be a juvenile as the winter plumage also looks very similar to this.

The angle and lack of body showing just make for brilliant viewing!

How did you manage to do this? I assume the bird is surfacing from a dive. How did you know it was going to surface at that point.

1/60 sec and no motion blur????? WOW.

An unusual but very good picture. Obviously you have had to put in the effort but I agree it has definately paid off :)

Congratulations Edwin! This photo has been chosen as "Birds and Wildlife" Photo of the week !
respirándonos, miramos la campiña que adormece el sol,
los valles y los bosques y la humilde flor,
las islas navegando por la soledad...
